yummy restaurant alert! fat dragon offers tasty southern bbq tappas with asian flavors that are worth risking the trip to the infamous downtown east side for. yes, you will encounter the mumbling junkies, rail-thin zombies, crazy-eyed vampires and the toothless crack vixens on your way in, but their decor is so vibrant, charming and private, you will quickly forget what you have just witnessed.
my friend shirene and i went today for lunch and freaked-out on the eclectic menu. elements of korean, chinese, thai, vietnamese and southern states bbq are combined lovingly in a smoky, spicy and earthy culmination. we ordered way too many bao bun sandwiches. our favorites were filled with crunchy squid/ scallion/cilantro/chili salt and smoked crispy tofu/bean sprout kimchee/light soy. a green papaya, cabbage and fried shallot salad was refreshing on such a hot vancouver day. the stir-fried noodles with smoky bbq drippings were fantastic as was the chilled spinach and pea shoot salad.
the staff was friendly and helpful while the menu was unique with pork belly, lamb heart larb, pig snout, half a pig’s head, korean fried chicken and pork trotters being featured. an unlabelled bottle of homemade hot sauce was delightful on…everything!
you must go and please…don’t forget to invite me along.
